Have a look at some garden design ideas taken from projects I have done for clients. They range from a small family garden to a courtyard garden for entertaining.
This garden had little structure or purpose before we started. Now it has paths leading to different areas of the garden with different characteristics, which provides delightful contrasts.
I picked up Sally’s leaflet at the Harrogate Flower Show, the best thing I could have possibly done for my new overgrown and neglected garden. Sally returned my call to her office the same day and arranged a visit. Sally has been so helpful and efficient bringing together a wonderful and much admired garden, always asking what I envisaged as well as putting her expert knowledge and vision. Sally has been a joy to work with, I am sorry her visits are coming to an end.
This is a plantsmans garden packed with lovely plants. A summerhouse allows the clients to eat out and enjoy a different perspective of their garden.
This was designed to provide a quiet alternative for patients whilst attending the Macmillan Dales Unit Outpatients Ward at Harrogate District Hospital. The garden is soil-free ie hydroponic, due to the light load bearing capacity of the roof beneath and modern materials have been used to accommodate this.
Raised Bed Garden
This garden was designed for a wheelchair user so it had to be very low maintenance with things of interest at their eye level. Raised beds were put in at the most suitable height filling the garden with scent and colour.
The garden was built round a circular patio and a curved bench was specially commissioned to follow the exact radius. Objects were added to bring extra interest such a pink bauble, a frog water feature, a tasteful gnome and lighting. Easy-to-care for plants were used and a maintenance plan provided.
The raised beds in this garden would also suit an able bodied person that finds bending down difficult.
The clients wanted to give this part of their garden a more up-to-date look. They use it to get to other parts of the garden but didn’t want to make it look like a corridor whilst making it a nice place to sit. above all it had to be low maintenance.
We transformed the area by taking out most of the old raised beds and overgrown planting and put in a stylish rectangular pool. A beautifully made wooden bench allowed the clients to sit and enjoy the pool and the planting behind it. An area for eating was also put in.
This garden is quite low in maintenance due to gravel and paving and the plants we have used are easy to look after.
Garden For Entertaining
A good sized patio has been created from the gentle slope of the garden. A retaining wall has been put in with planting to soften it. The lawn above is reached by low wide steps which have the effect of inviting you into the rest of the garden without making the retaining wall too overbearing.
This garden drops 5 metres from top to bottom. A retaining wall was put in at the top to create a patio. This allows views of the whole garden and beyond. A gently curving path with intermittent steps dropped down the slope to the lawn below. Lush planting softened the lines of the path.
Large Family Garden
This garden was cut off from the house by garages. Two of the garages were removed which immediately connected house and garden.
A generous patio was created for eating out built round an apple tree. Wide steps overcome the change of level between house and garden and also make a nice feature. A pergola gave vertical interest, support for climbers and shade.
The rest of the garden was given over to children’s playspace.
This garden is packed with plants but is still easy to look after. It is behind a tall town house so the shape of the structure within the garden is important because it will be looked down on frequently.
